Welcome to the December issue of PHM Exchange – a newsletter from the People's Health Movement. PHM Exchange is sent to our activists and colleagues who have joined us over the last 25 years!! Yes, this year we are celebrating 25 years of the People’s Health Movement since we formally launched the movement at the first People’s Health Assembly in Savar, Bangladesh, in 2000. Below, we share news from our PHM country circles and networks from around the world.

Richard Horton, Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet, writes this piece about Global Health Watch 7 (GHW7), which is the first of a series of 5 that will touch upon the 5 sections of GHW7.

He writes – “The publication of Global Health Watch 7: Mobilizing for Health Justice (2025) by the People's Health Movement is an important event, one that deserves to be engaged with seriously… GHW7 offers a series of alternative narratives for global health, narratives that are commonly excluded from many mainstream venues, including The Lancet.”

He concludes- “If neoliberalism is dead and capitalism is destroying itself, perhaps the wellbeing economy is not such a ludicrously utopian idea after all”.

We are happy to share with you a brief report from PHM-India (Jan Swasthya Abhiyan) documenting the landmark National Convention on Health Rights organised by JSA during 11-12 December in Delhi, marking 25 years of action by the People’s Health Movement in India.

Bringing together over 550 health and social activists, health workers, movement leaders, and researchers from 23 states across all regions of the country, the convention foregrounded ongoing struggles and initiatives to resist privatisation and PPPs; demand the right to healthcare and strengthening of the public system; regulate private healthcare; improve healthcare financing; advance gender and social justice; ensure access to medicines; uphold health workers’ rights; and address the social and environmental determinants of health.

A notable feature of the convention was a session involving dialogue with Members of Parliament around JSA’s ten-point people’s health policy agenda. The convention was concluded with the release of Global Health Watch -7 and adoption of a People’s Resolution to guide our future campaigns. The convention hall resonated with inspiring songs, street plays and slogans which greatly inspired the participants. We look forward to your thoughts on it!

David Verstock, who works with Viva Salud and the PHM Secretariat, went to the Philippines and returned inspired by the PHM Philippines group. He met with GABRIELA, a women's militant movement that started in the 80s as an anti-Marcos (Ferdinand Marcos) coalition. They will plan a national/regional/global event on women's activism in 2026. Obeth from GABRIELA also recently became the co-coordinator / co-lead of the Gender Justice circle.  

He joined the PHM forum with the comrades from Palestine (who were visiting as part of Viva Salud’s work) and the Philippines at the University of Public Health in Manila.

The group is working strongly on anti-privatization/commercialization campaigns and civic space/criminalization campaigns. A key observation was that the Palestinian comrades feel very much connected with the testimonies from the Filipinos, about the martial law since the 80s, the red-tagging of “communists”, etc.  PHM Global is finding ways to continue our links with the groups in the Philippines.

This year marks 25 years of the People’s Health Movement (PHM) — 25 years of resistance, solidarity, and collective action for health justice. We celebrate this milestone with mixed feelings: deep pride in the endurance and vibrancy of our movement, but also profound concern that, a quarter of a century later, the dream of Health for All remains unrealized — and in many ways, further away than when we began.

Apart from country actions, on 6 December, we held a webinar organised by PHM Global to bring together our founding members, remember the ones who have departed, and listen to the new voices on the path of the health movement forward.

In 2024, PHM Sri Lanka initiated discussions to develop a community-based monitoring system (CBMS) to enhance the quality of local health services. On 19 June 2025 as the second phase of the development of a tool for CBMS, PHM Sri Lanka organised a Zoom webinar with Dr. Abhay Shukla and his team to share knowledge, experiences, and insights from the CBM system functioning with great outcomes in Maharashtra. Dr. Abhay Shukla is a physician and co-convenor of PHM-India and a consultant with SATHI Pune (Support for Advocacy and Training to Health Initiatives). He shared the lessons learned and SATHI team's journey of initiating the dialogue of CBM in India, Maharashtra, how it was developed at multiple levels, how it improved the health services, and the trust built upon great outcomes via multiple change cycles.  

Later, PHM Sri Lanka members met Dr. Abhay Shukla during his visit to Sri Lanka on 30 April 2025. Sarvodaya Movement hosted the event and we had a fruitful discussion about the challenging commercialization of the health system in South Asia.

Bienvenidas al número de diciembre del PHM Exchange, el boletín informativo del Movimiento de Salud de los Pueblos. PHM Exchange se envía a nuestras activistas y colegas que se han unido a nosotros durante los últimos 25 años. Sí, este año celebramos los 25 años del Movimiento desde que lanzamos oficialmente el movimiento en la primera Asamblea por la Salud de los Pueblos en Savar, Bangladesh, en 2000. Nos complace compartir con ustedes un breve informe de PHM-India (Jan Swasthya Abhiyan) que documenta la histórica Convención Nacional sobre el Derechos a la Salud organizada por JSA los días 11 y 12 de diciembre en Delhi, con motivo de los 25 años de acción del Movimiento en la India.

La convención, que reunió a más de 550 activistas sociales y sanitarios, trabajadores de la salud, líderes de movimientos e investigadores de 23 estados de todas las regiones del país, puso de relieve las luchas e iniciativas en curso para resistir la privatización y las APP; exigir el derecho a la atención en salud y el fortalecimiento del sistema público; regular la atención  privada; mejorar la financiación de la atención piublica; promover la justicia social y de género; garantizar el acceso a los medicamentos; defender los derechos de los trabajadores de la salud; y abordar las determinantes sociales y ambientales de la salud.

Una característica destacada de la convención fue una sesión en la que se dialogó con los miembros del Parlamento Indio obre una agenda de diez puntos presentada por JSA en materia de política salud. La convención concluyó con la presentación del Global Health Watch -7 y la adopción de una Resolución Popular para orientar futuras campañas. La sala de convenciones resonó con canciones inspiradoras, obras de teatro callejeras y consignas que inspiraron enormemente a los participantes. ¡Esperamos sus opiniones al respecto!

David, que trabaja con Viva Salud y la Secretaría del PHM, viajó a Filipinas y regresó inspirado por el grupo de PHM Filipinas, un movimiento con una labor militante muy fuerte. Se reunió con GABRIELA, un movimiento militante de mujeres que comenzó en los años 80 como una coalición contra Marcos (Ferdinand Marcos). Planificarán un evento nacional/regional/global sobre el activismo de las mujeres en 2026. Obeth, de GABRIELA, también se ha convertido recientemente en coordinadora/codirectora del círculo de Justicia de Género.

Se unió también al foro PHM con los compañeros de Palestina (que estaban de visita como parte del trabajo de Viva Salud) y Filipinas en la Universidad de Salud Pública de Manila.

El grupo está trabajando intensamente en campañas contra la privatización y la comercialización, y en campañas sobre el espacio cívico y la criminalización. Una observación clave fue que los compañeros palestinos se sienten muy identificados con los testimonios de los filipinos sobre la ley marcial desde los años 80, la etiqueta de «comunistas» que se les aplica, etc. PHM Global está buscando formas de continuar nuestros vínculos con los grupos de Filipinas.

Compartimos aquí esta contribución de los miembros de PHM Sri Lanka. Aunque la información es de hace unos meses, sigue siendo relevante.

En 2024, PHM Sri Lanka inició conversaciones para desarrollar un sistema de monitoreo comunitario (CBMS) con el fin de mejorar la calidad de los servicios de salud locales. El 19 de junio de 2025, como segunda fase del desarrollo de una herramienta para el CBMS, PHM Sri Lanka organizó un seminario web en Zoom con el Dr. Abhay Shukla y su equipo para compartir conocimientos, experiencias y perspectivas del sistema CBM, que funciona con excelentes resultados en Maharashtra. El Dr. Abhay Shukla es médico y coorganizador de PHM-India y consultor de SATHI Pune (Apoyo a la Defensa y la Formación de Iniciativas Sanitarias) y miembro del comité de gestión del PHM global. Compartió las lecciones aprendidas y el recorrido del equipo de SATHI para iniciar el diálogo sobre el CBM en la India, Maharashtra, cómo se desarrolló en múltiples niveles, cómo mejoró los servicios sanitarios y la confianza generada gracias a los excelentes resultados obtenidos a través de múltiples ciclos de cambio.

Más tarde, los miembros de PHM Sri Lanka se reunieron con el Dr. Abhay Shukla durante su visita a Sri Lanka el 30 de abril de 2025. El Movimiento Sarvodaya (miembro de PHM) organizó el evento y mantuvimos un fructífero debate sobre el difícil proceso de comercialización del sistema sanitario en el sur de Asia.

Este año se cumplen 25 años del Movimiento de Salud de los Pueblos (PHM): 25 años de resistencia, solidaridad y acción colectiva por la justicia en salud. Celebramos este hito con sentimientos encontrados: un profundo orgullo por la resistencia y el dinamismo de nuestro movimiento, pero también una profunda preocupación por el hecho de que, un cuarto de siglo después, el sueño de la salud para todos sigue sin hacerse realidad y, en muchos sentidos, está más lejos que cuando empezamos.

Además de las acciones nacionales, el 6 de diciembre celebramos un seminario web organizado por PHM Global para reunir a nuestros miembros fundadores, recordar a los que ya no están con nosotros y escuchar las nuevas voces en el camino hacia el avance del movimiento por la salud.
